Be yourself, all the cool people are doing it

When you think of Hollywood you think of all the glamorous, wealthy people and although they technically are different people, most of them are pretty much the same.  However, every once in a while you notice something different about some of them. Is it their style choices? Nope. Could it be that they have dyed their hair? Nah. Maybe they’re pregnant? Although it does seem to be all the rage in Hollywood, that’s not it.

Still wondering about the answer? Well, it happens to be a mixture of things; a mixture of the way they carry themselves, their confidence, the things they say, the career choices they make, how much they let the Hollywood ‘buzz’ affect them, and all of this together makes up who they are. It makes up the people in Hollywood that aren’t afraid to be themselves. Here are some of my favorite celebrities that aren’t afraid to be themselves and why they’re awesome.

Jennifer Lawrence: This 22 year old actress has become most famous for her role as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games series. Her fame skyrocketed immediately after the press got wind of the fact that she was the actress chosen to play this coveted role. Upon the release of this news, Lawrence began to do a lot of different interviews which is how America gets to know its celebrities just a little bit better. Jennifer Lawrence didn’t hold back any ounce of her personality in any of her interviews. She’s crude, and she showed us that. She’s hilarious, and she showed us that too. Best of all, she’s awkward. Just like the rest of us. At the 2013 Oscars, Jennifer Lawrence fell on the way up the stairs to accept her award. Immediately after she accepted her award, she went backstage for the customary interviews where reporters asked her about the fall (video of full interview below!).  Personally, I think she’s fantastic. I love the way she knows who she is and she is definitely not afraid to show it. Even when confronted with that dreaded topic of weight, she held her ground and said "In Hollywood, I’m obese … I’m considered a fat actress. I’m never going to starve myself for a part… I don’t want little girls to be like, 'Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner”.  For what it's worth, I think you look fab, JLaw! She shows us over and over again that she is not some Hollywood drone but that she is an actress who is awkward during interviews and has a kick-ass personality.

Here's the video of the interview that immediately followed JLaw's Oscar acceptance, I highly suggest watching the whole thing! It's absolutely hilarious:

Miley Cyrus: This former Disney darling has recently vamped up both her image and her career choices into something that many of her Hannah Montana followers won’t remotely recognize. Cyrus slowly transformed from Ms. Montana into the rebellious looking ‘bad girl’ that we see today. It started when she dyed her hair bleach blonde but didn’t stop there. From there, she cut off her hair, added to her tattoo collection, and completely changed everything she’s done in the public eye. She decided to completely disregard America’s expectations and do whatever she wanted. It was clear that Cyrus really didn’t care what anyone else thought of her decisions because she seemed to be happy with them. Miley’s newest release of her video for ‘We can’t stop’ shows a side of her that many of us didn’t think we would ever see (and don’t so much want to see). She has transformed herself into a crude sex symbol, which she seems to love. She has also slowly changed the way that she dresses as her recent wardrobe has been nothing but crop tops and jeans…I guess she wanted to make sure all of America gets to see as much of her as we can. Although I don’t necessarily agree with a lot of the career changes Ms. Cyrus has made, the one thing that I really love about her is the way she deals with fame. She loves to mess with the media because she knows that every move she makes will be over-analyzed and turn into a headline story. After her engagement to Liam Hemsworth, the pair was on every magazine you could find and was talked about on television quite frequently. To this day, Miley chooses whether or not to wear her engagement ring when she goes out in public because she knows that that’s what the paparazzi is looking for. When she’s asked about her engagement she always comes back with a snarky response along the lines of ‘Of course I’m still engaged, why would you think otherwise?’. I think that’s hilarious. Also, according to every pop culture television program, Miley Cyrus has just learned the joys of twerking, so congrats to her. You go, girl!

Amanda Seyfried: Some may know her as Karen from Mean Girls, or Sophie from Mamma Mia, or the most recent Cosette from Les Miserables. I happen to LOVE Amanda Seyfried. I think she is super fantastic. Not just because she’s a great actress…I mean, home-girl can even sing! But no, that’s not why I love her. I love the ‘realness’ she brings to every one of her interviews and the honesty that she is never afraid to share. I mean, when you first look at her, you see her beauty and you somewhat see innocence. But, in reality, Ms. Seyfried is vulgar, hilarious, and anything but innocent (all of which I think is great!). Fun fact about Amanda, her nickname is Mingey. What does that mean, you ask? It means vagina. Why would that be someone’s nickname and if it really is why in the world would she disclose that information in various interviews? BECAUSE SHE’S AWESOME, that’s why (‘Minge’ is also tattooed on her foot). Amanda Seyfried’s newest project has been playing the role of famous porn star Linda Lovelace in a movie. She has said that she is more than excited about the role and is anything but shy when sharing the details of her experience. When interviewing, Amanda’s honesty is always something that is front and center. She never shies away from a question because it’s uncomfortable; on the contrary, she brings up uncomfortable topics and proceeds to discuss them without any hesitation.  Obviously, I am a huge Amanda Seyfried fan and I cannot wait to see and read more of her interviews!

Here is an interview where Amanda Seyfried divulges all of her Linda Lovelace secrets:

I love seeing the ‘real’ side of celebrities, especially when it’s obvious that they are being themselves. I think these 3 ladies are perfect examples of how beneficial it is to be yourself. Each of them have shown their true colors and are all extremely successful! I don’t know about you, but I am definitely inspired and am going to continue to be myself, so in the wise words of Jonathan Larson (writer of RENT the Broadway musical):

‘Take me for what I am

Who I was meant to be

And if you give a damn

Take me baby or leave me

Take me baby or leave me’

Until next time,
